obituary 1952 - "Mrs. Ed Stewart, Toledo Resident, Dies at Age 77. Toledo -- Funeral Services for Mrs. Ed. Stewart, 77, of Toledo were held Wednesday afternoon at the Henderson Funeral home in Toledo. Rev. Roy Wilson, pastor of the Presbyterian church officiated. Burial was in Woodlawn cemetery. Paul bearers were Alfred Hofer, John Young, Charles Sleeter, Albert Lorenzen, Art Poland and Freeman Cockrel. Mrs. John Gray and Mrs. F. L. Flynn, accompanied by Mrs. P. H. Overturf sang "In The Garden" and "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere." Mrs. Elsie Mason, Mrs. Lorenzen and Mrs. Cockrel were in charge of the flowers. Mrs. Stewart died at the Deaconess hospital at 5:45 Monday morning, March 3, 1952. She had returned from the hospital last week and was taken back on Saturday morning. Death followed a lingering illness. She was born July 25, 1874 near Garwin, the daughter of Mont and Elizabeth Smith Shelton. She was married to John W. Stewart, who died and she later married Ed. Stewart who died in September of last year. Surviving are two sons, Frank Stewart of Marshalltown and Herb Stewart of Ce dar Rapids, an adopted daughter, Mrs. Otto (Doroty) Gustafson, Oak Park, Ill., and a granddaughter who made her home with the Stewarts until her marriage, Mrs. Cecil Witte of Nevada. Also surviving are three grandchildren and one great grandchild, a brother Levi, Shelton of Cedar Rapids and a sister Mrs. John Spear of Garwin. Mrs. Stewart was active in local American Legion Auxiliary, and was a past president."

newspaper clipping: Mrs. Stewart, Toledo, Dies in 78th Year -- Toledo -- (Special) -- Mrs. Bertha Stewart, 77, died of heart disease and complications at 5:45 a.m. Monday at Evangelical Deconess hospital, Marshalltown. Mrs. Stewart was born at Garwin July 25, 1874, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Evermont Shelton. She was active in the American Legion auxiliary at Toledo, where she had lived many hears. Her husband, Ed Stewart, died last September. Surviving are two sons, Frank, 513 N. Third st., Marshalltown, and Herbert, Cedar Rapids; one daughter, Mrs. Otto Gustafson, Oak Park, Ill., and three grandchildren, among them Mrs. Cecil Witte of Nevada, who was reared in the Stewart home. One brother, Levi Sheton of Cedar Rapids, and one sister, Mrs. John Spears of Garwin, aslo survive. The body was taken to the Henderson funeral home in Toledo."

Stewart, 68, Buried at Toledo -- Toledo -- Funeral services for William Edgar "Ed" Stewart, 68 , of Toledo were conducted Friday afternoon at the Henerson Funeral home by Rev. Roy Wilson, pastor of the Toledo Presbyterian church. Burial was in Woodlawn cemetery. Mr. Stewart died Wednesday morning, Sept. 12, following a years illness. He was the son of William and Amanda Stewart, pioneer Tama county residents and was born March 17, 1883 on a farm near Toledo. He was engineer at the city waterworks in Toledo for 32 years and retired about a year ago because of poor health. He was married to Bertha Shelton August 25, 1907. Mrs. Stewart survives together with an adopted daughter, Mrs. Otto (Dorothy) Gustafson of Chicago; a granddaughter whom they raised, Cecli (Doris) Witts of Nevad (sic); two other grandchildren and one great grandchild. Also surviving are his mother, Mrs. Stewart of LeGrand, five sisters, Nellie Roll, Marshalltown, Mrs. Grace Ferneau, LeGrand; Mrs. Merle Wilson, Ida Grove; Mrs. Alberta Addy and Mrs. Alva Hofer both of Toledo, and two step sons, Herb of Cedar Rapids and Frank of Marshalltown."
