The Clinton Herald Thursday February 2, 1956 page 14 Newspaper Vet Tom Murphy Dies Correspondent for Papers 25 years Thomas V. Murphy, 78 of 214 7th Ave. N. newspaperman for 63 years and Clinton correspondent for Davenport newspapers for 25 years prior to his retirement Aug. 1 died late Wednesday afternoon in Mercy hospital. Regarded as the oldest working newspaperman in Iowa at the time of his retirement, Murphy had been in ill health for several months. He was born Dec. 29, 1877 in Tama and came to Clinton as a child. He graduated from St. Irenaeus school in 1893. He spent six years learning the printing trade and in 1909 he became the city editor of the Clinton Journal. He then spent 10 years as city editor of the Clinton Herald and later became editor of the Clinton Daily Advertiser. He continued in that capacity until the newspaper was absorbed by the Herald. In 1930 he became Clinton correspondent for the Davenport papers and retained that position until his retirement. He was widely known in midwestern newspaper circles and his knowledge of the history, personality and the news sources in the area he covered were always at this fingertips. He was married Jan. 20, 1934 to Ethel Henry. She survives him as do one sister, Miss Winifred Murphy and one sister-in-law, Mrs. George Salzer, both of Clinton. A requiem mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday by Rev. E.F. Jackson, pastor of St. Irenaeus church. Burial will be in Springdale cemetery. The body is in the Snyder funeral home where friends may call after 7 p.m. today. The rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. Friday in the funeral home at St. Irenaeus parishoners.
