A close-up of inscriptions on the large FIELDS family monument at Colfax City Cemetery reveals the date of death for Sarah "Emma" L. (Meacham) Fields, wife of Alexander Tegarden Fields. The engraving reads, "Dying is but going home," and "Emma L., wife of A. T. Fields, died Feb. 5, 1886, aged 42 ys."
Upon her death, Emma left five daughters who had been born between 1869 and 1882. She also left more than 130 letters and postcards written between 1859 and her death that describe everyday life in the counties in Iowa in which she had lived: Johnson, Iowa, Poweshiek and Jasper. Her locket opens to reveal a likeness of her (future) husband Alex created before he left to serve in Company G, 7th Iowa Infantry Volunteers, July 8, 1861 to July 12, 1865.
There are no post-ems notes associated with this record.
