BERIT KNUDSDATTER ØSTREM LIEN

Springfield Cemetery
Winneshiek County, Iowa
Uploaded 6/28/2003

Biography by: Martha Jane (Schliesser) Hicks

Berit was the oldest child of her parents, Knud Eivindsen Remmesbrekken and Kari Kristoffersdatter Hæn. She was born on the Østrem farm in Vang, Oppland (county), Norway. The gravestone lists the wrong birth date both for Berit and her husband. The gravestone lists Berit's birth date as Sept. 29, 1826. However, I (Martha Hicks) found her microfilmed baptismal and confirmation records, and both of these records indicate that she was born on October 7, 1826. Her baptism date was in November 1826. (Her husband was born on Feb. 14, 1815, rather than Feb. 18, according to both his baptism and confirmation records.)

Berit married Gullik Knudsen Lien on April 14, 1850. One month after the wedding, Gullik and Berit immigrated to the United States, along with her parents and siblings. After a difficult winter and a long journey, Gullik and Berit settled in Springfield Township, Winneshiek Co., Iowa, where they ran a successful farm and lived out their lives.

Berit and Gullik had eleven daughters and three sons: Sarah (1850), *Knud ("Knute G. Lee"- 1852), Kari (1853), Marit (1855), Kjirsti (1856), Berit (1857), Ingebor (1859), Ole ("Ole G. Lee"- 1861), Gertrude (1862), Christopher (1864), Anna (1866), Guri (1867), Christine (1869), and Elvina (1872).

Gullik died on April 12, 1903, and Berit died the following year on March 22, 1904.

Besides the wrong birth dates for Gullik and Berit, there is one additional error on the grave inscription: Berit's middle initial should be "K." (for Knudsdatter), not "G." The gravestone inscriptions were made some years after their deaths, at the same time as gravestones for other family members. All the children's middle initials were "G." and the stone cutter made an error by giving the wife the same middle initial (G.) as all the children. The graves of six children are grouped around the gravestone of Gullik and Berit: (1) Elvina G., (2) Kari G., (3) Guri G., (4) Kjirsti G.,
(5) Anna G. and (6) Christine G.

Credit for the gravestone photo goes Alden G. Lien who sent the photo to me (Martha Hicks).
