GULLIK KNUDSEN LIEN

Springfield Cemetery
Winneshiek County, Iowa
Uploaded 6/28/2003

Biography by: Martha Jane (Schliesser) Hicks

Gullik was the second of nine children born to his parents, Knud Tomassen Tørpe and Sigrid Olsdatter (Septon) Lien. He was born on the Septon farm in Vang, Oppland (county), Norway. The farm name was officially changed from Septon to Lien about 1830. Gullik's gravestone gives his birth date as Feb. 18, 1815; however, this is an error. I (Martha HIcks) found both his microfilmed baptism and confirmation records, which both clearly record his birth date as February 14, 1815.

Gullik married Berit Knudsdatter Østrem on April 14, 1850. (As for Gullik, the gravestone lists the wrong birth date for Berit, listing it as Sept. 29, 1826. Both her Norwegian baptism and confirmation records both show that she was born on October 7, 1826.

In 1850, one month after their wedding, Gullik and Berit immigrated to the United States, along with her parents and siblings. After a difficult winter and a long journey, Gullik and Berit settled in Springfield Township, Winneshiek Co., Iowa, where they ran a successful farm and lived out their lives.

Gullik and Berit had eleven daughters and three sons: Sarah (1850), *Knud ("Knute G. Lee"- 1852), Kari (1853), Marit (1855), Kjirsti (1856), Berit (1857), Ingebor (1859), Ole ("Ole G. Lee"- 1861), Gertrude (1862), Christopher (1864), Anna (1866), Guri (1867), Christine (1869), and Elvina (1872).

Gullik died on April 12, 1903, and Berit died on March 22, 1904, in Winneshiek County, Iowa.

Besides the wrong birth dates for Gullik and Berit, there is one additional error on the grave inscription: Berit's middle initial should be "K." (for Knudsdatter), not "G." The gravestone inscriptions were made some years after their deaths, at the same time as gravestones for other family members. All the children's middle initials were "G." and the stone cutter made an error by giving the wife the same middle initial (G.) as all the children. The graves of six children are grouped around the gravestone of Gullik and Berit: (1) Elvina G., (2) Kari G., (3) Guri G., (4) Kjirsti G.,
(5) Anna G. and (6) Christine G.

Credit for the gravestone photo belongs to Alden G. Lien who sent the photo to me (Martha Hicks).
