SLATES CEMETERY

Douglas Twp.
Shelby County, Iowa
Uploaded 5/5/2005

SLATES CEMETERY

Slates Cemetery is located in Douglas Township in a wooded area on a farm. It has been neglected for some time. The bodies have been moved to the Rose Hill Cemetery. Last Summer the Boy Scouts cleaned up the area and laid rock for paths to walk among the remaining stones.

My cousin, Dan Hayes, found these 2 gravestones while hunting: Catherine HAYES and William MILLER. He called me and took me there and I took photos. I then contacted Phyllis Heller, and emailed her the pictures. She contacted Ray Anastasi. The Boy Scouts then cleaned it up.

We had coffee the other morning with Rex Adams of Kirkman, a descendant of the Slates family. He told us of the existence of the cemetery, and he will be glad that it is officially recorded here on this site. The next meeting of the Kirkman Alumni Association is scheduled for August 9, 2009. Contact Rex (Kirkman phone book) or myself for more details. DW
