James was the son of John and Elizabeth Armstrong Wiley. He was born in Ireland and came to U.S. during the potato famine. His parents remained in Ireland.

Mary was the daughter of James and Mary Massey Brown. They came to the U.S. from England when Mary and her sister, Sarah, were children.
