Martin Lars Andersen was born March 12, 1879 at Lynby, Denmark and died April 25, 1961 at Myrtue Memorial hospital in Harlan at the age of 82 years, 1 month and 13 days.
He grew to manhood in Denmark where he was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. Since his residence in and near Harlan he has been a member of Immanuel's Lutheran church.
Mr Andersen came to the United States in 1905, going to the Sutton, Nebraska vicinity where he made his home with his aunt and uncle.
March 14, 1912 he was united in marriage to Johanna Jensen in Omaha, Nebraska. To this union 4 sons were born.
They farmed in Nebraska for 5 years before moving to Shelby County in 1918. Mr and Mrs Andersen moved into Harlan in 1942 where they have since resided.
He was preceded in death by his son, Harold who was killed in action in the Philippines in World War II and by his parents and two brothers in Denmark.
He is survived by his wife, Johanna; three sons, Arnold, Robert and Raymond all of Harlan; one sister Mrs Sena Davis of Murray, Iowa and five grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at the Pauley Funeral Home Friday, April 28, 1961 at 2 p.m. with Pastor Oscar E. Johnson officiating. Burial was in the Harlan cemetery.
Pallbearers were Orrell Gearhart, Orville Andersen, Lawrence Andersen, Alfred Christensen, Arnold Christensen and Andrew Sondergaard.

HARLAN - Johanna Andersen was born Aug. 23, 1889, at Aalborg, Denmark. She was raised and educated in Denmark. In 1909, when she was 20 years old, she immigrated to Iowa and settled in the Redline area. She worked near Irwin before her marriage to Martin Andersen on March 14, 1912, at Omaha, NE. They farmed in Nebraska for a number of years and later farmed near Tennant and the Harlan areas. They retired to Harlan in 1942. She was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church of Harlan. She has been a resident of the Salem Lutheran Homes in Elk Horn since 1979 and she died there on March 18, 1988 at age 98 years, 6 months and 25 days.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Martin in 1961; son, Harold during WW II and two sisters, Andrea Mathiesen and Rise Jensen.
Survivors include three sons, Arnold, Robert C. and Raymond all of Harlan; and six grandchildren and 13 great.grandchildren.
Funeral services were March 21, 1988 at the Burmeister Funeral Home with Rev. Otto Zwanziger and Rev. Paul Olsen officiating.
Burial was in the Harlan cemetery with Allan Ickes, Greg Musfeldt, Rick Andersen, Allan Andersen, Arthur Andersen and Robert Andersen serving as casket bearers.
