William H. Duke, 83
HARLAN - William Hoyt Duke, son of Thomas and Mabel Hemlin Duke was born Feb. 21, 1905 near Harlan. He worked at home on the farm and attended rural school.
July 1, 1925, he married Ina Nelson at Denison. They lived at Harlan, Kirkman and Irwin. At Irwin he was a mechanic and Co-op tank wagon driver. He also served as Fire Chief for 16 years. He moved to Spirit Lake in 1958, where he worked in the police department and later as a maintenance man at Arnold's Park. He retired to Harlan in 1972. He was baptized at his home in 1986 and since has placed his membership in the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan. He died Jan. 15, 1989 at the Baptist Memorial Home in Harlan at age 83 years, 10 months and 24 days.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ina in 1986; two brothers, Guyle and Max Duke. Survivors include his daughter, Phylis Winter of Lincoln, NE; three sisters, Fern Dent, Vera (Mrs. Albert) Wunder and Dorothy Christensen of Harlan; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Funeral services were held Jan. 17,1989 at the Burmeister Funeral Home with Rev. Otto Zwanziger officiating. Burial was in the Harlan cemetery with Vernon Brue, David Jensen, Larry Wunder, Walter Murray, Garland Barratt and Darwin Andersen serving as casket bearers.
