Harlan - Ethel Viola Lanphere, daughter of Ole C. and Gena (Christensen) Olson, was born Aug. 19, 1898, in Cuppy's Grove, in Center Township, Shelby County. She lived at her parents' home until she was a young adult She attended country school and Cuppy's Grove Church, She accepted Christ at an early age and subsequently became an active church member.
She married Enoch Lanphere in 1927 and they moved to Harlan in the early 1930's. She became a charter member of Bethel Baptist Church in Harlan and was actively involved there. She did handwork out of her home for many years and was an avid gardener, She also took care of her invalid mother for six years. He died July 3, 1978. In spite of failing health, she stayed in their home in Harlan, caring for her flowers, birds and red geraniums until June, 1992. She then entered the Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn. She died there Sept 28,1995 at age 97 years, 1 month and 9 days.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Enoch; and two brothers, Lenan and Roy. Survivors include one daughter, Katheryn Miller of La Mesa, CA; one brother, Guy Olson of Waco, TX; two sisters, Grace Jensen of Tyler, MN and Mildred Kellogg of Oelwein; one grandson, Craig Miller and four great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Oct 2, 1995 at Bethel Baptist Church in Harlan with Pastor Roger Crawford officiating. Casket bearers were Ron Jensen, Byron Jensen, Elliott Svendsen, Milo Johnson, Richard Andersen and Kenneth Jorgensen. Burial was in the Harlan Cemetery. Burmeister Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
