Anna Marie Carr was born in Black Rock, County Cork, Ireland. She attended schools in Dublin and London and sailed to the United States with her parents arrivng in New York City on May 10, 1850. Soon they moved to a farm in Cattaraugus County, New York where she met and married her husband, Alexander Henry, on September 12, 1854. Six of their children were born there. They moved to Clayton County, Iowa in 1867 and settled in the Cox Creek area where seven more children were born to them. Anna Marie is the mother of Michael, Mary Catherine, Anna Maria, Robert, John, Grace Ellen, William, Catherine, Alexander, Martin, Rose, Peter and Margaret. She is the daughter of Michael Carr and Anna McDonnell Carr, the sister of Ellen Carr McTaggart and sister-in-law to Michael McTaggart.
